That’s the job of the Yealink YPS20.

The YPS20 is an infrared partition sensor built for divisible meeting rooms using Yealink SkySound room audio. It detects whether the movable wall is present or removed, then sends that state to the Yealink AP08 through GPIO. The AP08 can switch between preconfigured divided-room and combined-room audio settings automatically.

Detection distance is adjustable across 6 sensitivity levels, with an effective working range up to 1.5 metres. A 10-metre connection cable is supplied, which gives installers room to place the sensor correctly while keeping the AP08 in the AV rack or equipment area.

This matters in Dubai conference spaces where one large training room may become two smaller rooms during the day. Instead of asking staff to change DSP settings manually, the room reacts to the physical partition position.

Installation needs proper alignment. The sensor should face the partition as directly as possible, with Yealink specifying an installation angle below 30° where straight-on mounting isn’t practical. Strong lighting and objects behind the partition also need to be considered when setting sensitivity.

What the YPS20 Actually Controls

The YPS20 is not a room-booking sensor and it is not a general occupancy detector. It has one job: identify whether the movable partition is in the position the AV system expects. That position is then used as a trigger inside the Yealink room-audio design.

The sensor connects to the Yealink AP08 DSP through its GPIO interface. From there, the room designer defines what should happen when the partition is present and what should happen when it is removed. In a simple two-room setup, that normally means one DSP configuration for Room A, another for Room B, and a third configuration for Room A+B when the wall is open.

Partition closed

Each room runs independently. Microphones, loudspeakers and room processing stay assigned to their own side of the partition. That keeps a discussion in Room A from feeding into Room B through the AV system.

The AP08 can load the combined-room preset. Audio zones are joined according to the design, allowing the larger space to operate as one meeting, event or training room.

That automatic switching is the reason the YPS20 belongs in divisible rooms. A venue team in a Dubai hotel or a facilities team in a DIFC office shouldn’t need to understand DSP routing just because the movable wall changed position.

Why Sensitivity Setup Matters More Than the Sensor Spec

The headline number is 1.5 metres. That is the maximum effective sensing distance specified for the YPS20. In a real installation, the more important number is the selected sensitivity level.

There are 6 sensitivity settings. The installer uses those levels to match the sensor to the actual distance between the mounting point and the moving wall. That matters because the YPS20 uses infrared diffuse-reflection detection. The sensor is looking for a reflected response from the partition surface, so wall finish, nearby structures and objects behind the partition all become part of the setup.

Take a hotel ballroom with a folding acoustic wall. The sensor may be mounted 800 mm away from the closed partition, while a structural column sits another metre behind it. Running the sensor at maximum sensitivity when the wall only needs to be detected at 800 mm gives you no benefit. It may simply make the installation more sensitive to whatever is behind the moving wall.

This is not a “mount it anywhere” sensor

The 1.5 m specification is a maximum effective working distance, not a target for every installation. The correct sensitivity should be set against the actual partition distance and surrounding surfaces. Final testing should be done with the wall fully open and fully closed.

Yealink also notes that sensor-to-sensor variation can be around 10%, so commissioning should be based on the physical room instead of assuming every YPS20 will react at an identical millimetre point. That small detail matters on multi-room projects where several sensors are installed across the same floor.

Placement Around Glass, Lights and Moving Walls

Dubai interiors create a few predictable problems. Glass partitions. Bright architectural lighting. Reflective finishes. Movable walls that never stop in exactly the same place twice. The YPS20 can work in those rooms, but placement needs to be decided before the ceiling is closed.

The optical axis should face the partition as directly as possible. If the room geometry prevents a straight-on installation, the mounting offset should stay below 30°. The sensor-to-partition distance still needs to remain within the verified 1.5 m working range.

Strong light directly into the sensing path should be avoided. The same applies to areas where people, doors, curtains or loose objects can repeatedly move through the detection zone. A sensor installed beside a glass door in a JLT training centre, for example, needs more care than one mounted above a solid acoustic divider in a dedicated boardroom.

Mount the sensor where the partition gives a repeatable reflection, keep the sensing path clear, choose the lowest practical sensitivity that detects the closed wall reliably, then test several open-close cycles before the room is handed over.

How the YPS20 Fits Into a Yealink SkySound Room

The sensor normally sits inside a larger Yealink ProAV design rather than operating by itself. That design can include AP08 DSP processing, CM-series ceiling microphones, CS-series ceiling speakers and the room conferencing hardware chosen for each side of the partition.

It is also useful when a large Teams room needs to become two separate spaces after the main meeting ends. The conferencing hardware can change by project; the partition logic remains the same.

Not the right fit?

If the room has no movable partition, the YPS20 normally adds no value. If the room has several moving walls or more than two operating layouts, the sensor count and AP08 logic should be designed as part of the complete room-audio system rather than ordered as isolated accessories.

BYOD, Content Sharing and PABX — What the YPS20 Does Not Do

The YPS20 does not carry video, USB content, HDMI, Dante audio or a laptop BYOD connection. It is not a presentation device. Its job is much narrower: detect the movable partition and provide that state to the AP08 so the room can react to the physical layout.

Content sharing is handled by the conferencing system installed in the room. A divisible Teams room might use an MVC system on each side. Another project may use separate room computers, wireless presentation hardware or a larger integrated AV design. The YPS20 sits underneath that user experience and tells the audio system whether the rooms are physically divided or joined.

It also does not register to a PABX, SIP extension, Etisalat service or du voice service. There is no telephone account on the sensor. If a divisible room requires PSTN calling or an existing office PABX connection, that is configured on the room conferencing endpoint separately. Keeping those roles separate makes troubleshooting much easier: YPS20 handles partition state; AP08 handles room-audio logic; the conferencing endpoint handles calls.

What Comes With the Yealink YPS20

The important installation item is the supplied 10-metre sensor cable. That gives the installer useful freedom when the AP08 is mounted in an AV rack away from the partition line.

The room should still be surveyed before ordering. Sensor position is determined by the partition path, usable mounting surface, nearby lighting and the route back to the AP08. On a finished DIFC or DMCC office floor, cable access above the ceiling can matter just as much as the sensor itself.

Not included — plan these separately

The Yealink AP08 DSP, ceiling microphones, loudspeakers, conferencing hardware, AV rack equipment and any project-specific cable extension are separate from the YPS20. For a divisible room, these parts should be specified together rather than treating the sensor as a standalone purchase.

How We Commission a Divisible Room

A partition sensor only works properly when the room states have already been planned. We normally start with the room in its smallest divided configuration, identify which microphones and speakers belong to each side, then define the combined layout used when the wall opens.

Survey the partition — Check the closed position, open position, mounting distance, lighting, reflective surfaces and cable path back to the AV rack.

Connect to AP08 GPIO — Install the YPS20 and route the sensor connection back to the AP08. The sensor state is then available to the room logic.

Build the room states — Configure the divided and combined-room behaviour in Yealink Room Designer and the AP08 audio design.

Tune sensitivity — Select the practical detection level for the actual wall distance instead of leaving the sensor at maximum sensitivity by default.

Cycle the room repeatedly — Open and close the partition several times while checking audio routing. We test the real physical movement, not just the GPIO state on a configuration screen.

That last test catches the sort of fault that appears after an installer leaves: a folding wall stopping slightly short, a sensor reacting to a background surface, or one side of the combined room keeping the wrong microphone route. Better to find it during handover.

Where We Use YPS20 in UAE Projects

The common use case is a room that changes identity during the working day. A Dubai training centre may run two 20-person sessions in the morning, open the wall for a 40-person presentation after lunch, then split the room again for evening workshops. The users should not have to know that an AP08 preset exists.

Hotel conference floors are another fit. Ballrooms and meeting suites often have movable acoustic partitions operated by the events team, while the AV rack is locked away in a service area. YPS20 allows the physical wall position to become part of the room control logic rather than relying on someone to remember a manual audio setting.

Will the YPS20 automatically know when our meeting-room wall has been opened?

Yes, when it is installed and configured as part of the AP08 room design. The YPS20 detects the partition state and provides that state through GPIO. The AP08 then applies the divided-room or combined-room configuration that was created for the project. The switching logic has to be configured during commissioning; the sensor does not invent the room layout by itself.

How far can the YPS20 be mounted from the partition?

The verified maximum effective detection distance is 1.5 metres. The sensor also provides 6 sensitivity levels, so the installer can tune it for the actual distance instead of running maximum sensitivity in every room. We test the wall in both open and closed positions before handover.

Can we use the YPS20 without a Yealink AP08?

For the documented Yealink divisible-room design, the YPS20 connects to the AP08 through GPIO and the AP08 handles the room-audio state. If you already have a different DSP or control system, send us the existing AV design before ordering. Does YPS20 work with Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Etisalat or du?

The YPS20 itself does not log into Teams or Zoom and does not register to Etisalat or du. It is a partition sensor. The room’s Teams, Zoom or phone connectivity is handled by the conferencing endpoint, while the YPS20 and AP08 manage the physical split-room and combined-room audio behaviour.

Can you install the YPS20 in an existing divisible room in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Yes, subject to a check of the existing AP08, cable route and partition layout.
