The Yealink CM20 and CM50 move voice pickup above the table. No microphone puck beside the laptop. No cable running through the middle of a 12-seat table. Both belong to Yealink’s SkySound ceiling-audio family, but they aren’t two sizes of the same microphone. The CM20 is the simpler AES67 route with its own integrated DSP. The CM50 is the Dante option for engineered rooms where pickup zones, larger coverage and multi-camera coordination matter.

CM20 or CM50? Start With the Room, Not the Model Number

For most buyers, this is the useful distinction. A standard meeting room with one main table and around 12 seats doesn’t automatically need the CM50. Yealink’s own SkySound room design pairs a CM20 with two CS10 ceiling speakers and an MVC860 for a 12-person medium room. That keeps the audio architecture relatively simple because the CM20 contains its own DSP.

Move into a 16-person boardroom, a long executive table or a room where the audio system has to work with several cameras, and the design changes. Yealink’s large-room example moves to the CM50 with four CS10 ceiling speakers and an AP08 processor. For a 23-person boardroom, the design uses two CM50 microphones, six CS10-D speakers and AP08 processing with an MVC S90. Bigger room. Different audio architecture.

CM20 — What the Pickup Numbers Actually Mean

A microphone range number without its test condition isn’t very useful. Yealink gives two measured figures for the CM20. At a 2.8-metre deployment height, with RT60 measured at 408 ms at 1 kHz and background noise at 40 dBA, Yealink records a 3.2-metre pickup radius at STIPA 0.78. At 4.5 metres, the stated STIPA figure drops to 0.72.

That distinction matters in a JLT meeting room with an 8-metre-long table. One CM20 centred in the ceiling may look close enough on a floor plan, but the room acoustics, ceiling height and seat positions still decide whether one microphone is enough. The same goes for a glass boardroom in DMCC where HVAC diffusers sit directly beside the planned microphone position.

CM20 also uses 16 omnidirectional microphone units across 8 independent pickup zones. Frequency response is 120 Hz to 16 kHz, maximum SPL is 122 dBSPL and the published signal-to-noise ratio is 86 dB at less than 1% THD. Its integrated DSP handles the audio processing path inside the microphone, which is why Yealink positions CM20 as the simpler plug-in ceiling-audio route for MVC rooms.

CM50 — For Rooms Where the Microphone Has to Know Where to Listen

The CM50 changes the design from general ceiling coverage to controlled pickup. Its array contains 127 wide-range microphone units, and Yealink specifies a 5-metre premium pickup radius with STI above 0.76 under its stated room conditions. Eight configurable pickup areas let the audio design concentrate on the seats that belong to the meeting instead of treating every sound under the ceiling as equally important.

Dante support also puts the CM50 into a different AV category. The microphone can sit on a network-audio architecture with Yealink processing, ceiling speakers and supported third-party audio devices. For larger DIFC conference rooms, training spaces or executive boardrooms where microphone, speaker and camera placement are engineered as one system, that flexibility matters.

CM50 also provides sound-source localisation for supported Yealink room systems. In multi-camera deployments, the audio system can identify where the active voice is coming from and pass that position into the camera workflow. Instead of choosing a camera view only from a wide visual frame, the room can use voice position as part of the tracking logic.

Noise Reduction Is Only Half the Audio Problem

Dubai offices don’t just have noise. They have reverb. A ceiling cassette humming at one frequency is background noise; a voice bouncing between a glass wall, polished floor and boardroom table is a different problem. CM20 uses AI Dynamic Noise Reduction together with AI Reverberation Suppression, so the processing deals with both categories rather than treating every unwanted sound as the same thing.

How CM20 and CM50 Connect Into the Meeting Room

Neither microphone works like a USB desk microphone that you plug straight into a laptop. These are installed room-audio devices. The microphone sits in the ceiling, takes power and audio over the network, and becomes part of the room system that handles the meeting.

CM20 is the easier route when the room already uses a supported Yealink MVC system. Its DSP is built into the microphone, and Yealink positions it for direct use with current MVC room systems without requiring a separate external audio processor for the basic design. One network cable carries PoE power and AES67 network audio. Less equipment above the ceiling or in the AV cabinet.

CM50 belongs in the engineered Dante lane. Here we design the microphone, DSP, ceiling speakers, cameras and network together. Yealink’s own larger-room SkySound layouts use CM50 with processors such as AP08 and CS10-series ceiling speakers. For a DIFC boardroom with two cameras, a long table and separate presentation area, that gives us much more control than dropping a single microphone in the middle of the ceiling and hoping its coverage reaches everything.

Teams, Zoom and BYOD — The Room System Decides

A ceiling microphone doesn’t sign into Microsoft Teams or Zoom by itself. The room computer or video conferencing system does that job. CM20 or CM50 supplies the room audio into that system.

CM50 has Microsoft Teams certification and is designed for Yealink Pro-AV Teams Rooms deployments, including MVC S90-class systems. Yealink also supports audio-camera coordination where CM50 sound-source positioning provides information that supported Yealink cameras can use during speaker tracking.

With CM20, the practical question is which room system you’re connecting it to. Yealink currently positions CM20 with its 4th-generation MVC systems and all-in-one conferencing devices. If your company also takes Zoom, Google Meet or Webex calls through BYOD, that platform normally runs on the connected room system or laptop. What to Order With the Ceiling Microphone

The microphone is only the pickup side of the room. A proper ceiling-audio quotation also accounts for the speakers, network ports, PoE capacity, mounting method and the video system that will use the audio.

Ceiling Installation in Dubai — Where the Job Usually Goes Wrong

The microphone position on an architectural drawing isn’t automatically the right acoustic position. We’ve seen meeting rooms where the centre of the table sits directly below a large HVAC diffuser. Put a ceiling microphone there and you’ve given the air-conditioning system the nearest seat in every call.

CM20 supports in-ceiling, on-ceiling and suspended installation options. That helps in UAE offices where one floor has gypsum tiles and the next has exposed services. Does CM20 or CM50 Connect to an Etisalat, du or Office PABX?

Not directly. CM20 and CM50 are microphones, not SIP phones. They don’t register as extensions on Grandstream UCM, 3CX, Yeastar, Avaya or an Etisalat/du voice service.

If a Teams Room or other conferencing system needs PSTN or SIP calling, that integration happens at the room-system or communications-platform level. The ceiling microphone remains the audio pickup device. This distinction is useful during an office fit-out because the AV network and the telephone/PABX network may be designed by two different contractors even though users see them as one meeting room.

Will one CM20 cover the far end of our long meeting table?
