Will a 2G GSM gateway work in the UAE?
No. The TDRA-mandated 2G shutdown was completed by Etisalat and du, and 2G-only devices have been barred from sale in the UAE since 2022 — a 2G-only gateway cannot register a SIM here. For UAE installation you need a 4G VoLTE model such as the Dinstar UC2000-VE-4T or a Yeastar TG with the LTE module. 2G units remain correct for export markets where those networks still run.

What does a GSM gateway actually do?
It holds mobile SIM cards and presents them to your phone system as normal lines. The PBX can dial out through the SIMs, receive calls to those numbers, and send or receive SMS — so mobile network coverage becomes phone-system capacity, anywhere there is signal and power.
How many SIM channels do I need?
Count the calls that must run at the same time through the SIMs. Pure failover for a small office: two channels covers it. A site living entirely on mobile lines: one channel per two to three staff who call often. SMS-heavy systems: channels set the messages-per-minute ceiling. Two-way: received SMS can forward to email or your application.
Is using a GSM gateway legal in the UAE?
For your own business communications — failover, sites without landlines, SMS from your systems, staff calls on your operator packages — yes. What is illegal is SIM-box call termination: routing other people’s international traffic through local SIMs to bypass operator interconnect (a SIM box operation).
