 You can install good ceiling microphones, network speakers, AVoIP endpoints and room cameras, then connect all of them to the wrong switch and spend the next week chasing intermittent faults. Audio drops for a second. A multicast stream reaches ports that never needed it. One PoE device refuses to start after another unit is added to the rack. The meeting room looks finished, but the network underneath it isn’t.

That becomes a real issue in larger Dubai AV projects. A DIFC boardroom may have several networked audio devices, a room camera, control hardware and fibre back to a central rack. What the RCH240 Actually Does in an AV Rack

The RCH240 isn’t a meeting room endpoint. It doesn’t sit on the table and nobody taps it to join a call. It belongs in the rack, where it connects the networked devices that make the room work: cameras, audio processors, microphones, speakers, AVoIP hardware and other PoE endpoints.

Its 24 Gigabit PoE ports provide both network connectivity and power to compatible devices. That reduces the number of local power adaptors needed around the room and makes centralised cabling much cleaner. In a proper AV deployment, the rack becomes the power and data centre for the room instead of having adapters hidden above ceilings and behind displays.

24 ports doesn’t automatically mean 24 powered devices

The switch has a total PoE budget of 370W. Every powered endpoint connected to it draws from that same pool. A rack design should therefore be checked by device wattage, not only by port count. Twenty low-draw devices can be fine while a smaller number of higher-draw endpoints may push the power calculation much closer to the limit.

4 SFP uplinks for fibre between racks or floors

The 4 SFP interfaces give system designers a practical way to move traffic over fibre instead of relying on long copper runs. Useful when the main network rack is on another floor, when an AV room is some distance from the core switch, or when several conference spaces need to be connected back to a central equipment room.

Dante and AES67 — Why They Matter Here

Network audio is different from plugging an analogue microphone into a mixer. Dante and AES67 move audio streams across Ethernet, which means the switch becomes part of the audio path. It has to handle multicast traffic properly, maintain predictable packet delivery and keep unnecessary traffic away from ports that don’t need it.

IGMP Snooping and Fast Leave — The Multicast Part Buyers Usually Miss

A normal office network mostly carries traffic from one device to another. AV networks often add multicast streams, where one source can send audio or video to multiple destinations. Without the right controls, that traffic can be forwarded to ports that never asked for it.

IGMP Snooping helps the switch understand which ports have actually joined a multicast group. Instead of flooding the same stream across the entire switch, multicast traffic can be kept to the destinations that need it.

Fast Leave shortens the time required to stop sending a multicast stream to a port after that endpoint leaves the group. In AV systems where sources and destinations can change during operation, that helps reduce unnecessary traffic hanging around longer than required.

You won’t see either feature on the conference table, but they’re exactly the type of network functions that prevent a busy AV installation from behaving like a badly configured office LAN.

Where the RCH240 Fits — Room Size Is Only Half the Question

With a meeting-room switch, seat count isn’t enough to choose the hardware. A 20-person boardroom with one camera and one microphone may use fewer network endpoints than a 10-person divisible room with ceiling audio, multiple speakers, control hardware and AVoIP distribution.

Don’t buy by port count alone

If the project only needs a handful of AV endpoints, a 24-port switch may be unnecessary. If the design needs more than 370W of total PoE power, the RCH240 can also be undersized even when spare physical ports remain. Send the device list, expected PoE loads and rack layout before ordering. The switch should be sized against the actual AV design.

Platform Compatibility — Think Infrastructure, Not Meeting App

The RCH240 itself isn’t a Teams Room or Zoom Room endpoint. It doesn’t run Microsoft Teams, Zoom or Google Meet. Its job is underneath those systems: move Ethernet traffic, power supported devices and provide the network controls required by the connected AV hardware.

BYOD and Wireless Sharing — Where the RCH240 Sits

A visitor plugging a laptop into a meeting room doesn’t interact with the RCH240 directly. BYOD devices, presentation pods and room controllers sit higher up the system. The switch is the infrastructure underneath them, carrying Ethernet traffic and supplying PoE to supported network endpoints.

That distinction matters when an AV rack contains a mixture of conferencing hardware, Dante audio and AVoIP distribution. A wireless presentation device might put content onto the room display. An encoder may put an AV signal onto the network. A decoder receives it somewhere else. The RCH240 handles the network path between those devices rather than generating the presentation itself.

For rooms that specifically need laptop sharing or BYOD, products such as the Yealink wireless presentation and BYOD range are specified separately. On larger systems, we design those endpoints together with the switch, PoE budget, VLAN layout and uplink path rather than treating each item as an isolated box.

PABX, Etisalat and du — What the Switch Does Not Do

The RCH240 is not a SIP phone, SIP gateway or PABX endpoint. It doesn’t register an extension, place a telephone call or connect directly to an Etisalat or du voice account. That’s a different layer of the room.

If a Microsoft Teams Room, Zoom Room or another conferencing system in the same project needs PSTN or SIP calling, that function is handled by the conferencing platform, SBC, PABX or telephone equipment specified for the site. The RCH240 may carry Ethernet traffic used by connected equipment, but it doesn’t become the telephone system.

This is useful to establish before a quotation. For a Dubai office with an existing 3CX, Grandstream, Yeastar, Avaya or other SIP environment, send us both the AV device list and the current voice-system layout. One detail that gets missed on basic product listings: Yealink documents cascaded RCH240 deployments. That gives the switch a role beyond a single isolated room when a project grows into multiple racks or a larger collection of AV endpoints.

Think of a hotel conference floor with several divisible rooms, or a corporate training centre where the equipment rack serving one area has to connect back to another rack. The 4 SFP interfaces provide the fibre-uplink side of that design, while managed multicast controls help keep AV traffic where it belongs.

Cascading still needs proper design. Port totals, fibre modules, uplink capacity, VLANs and the 370W PoE allowance per switch all need to be calculated from the endpoint schedule. More switches doesn’t remove that homework. It just gives the system room to grow in a controlled way.

The RCH240 isn’t limited to one conference table. Yealink provides a cascaded setup procedure for larger deployments. What’s in the Box — and What You Should Budget Separately

The RCH240 itself uses a built-in power supply, so the rack doesn’t need an external power brick hanging behind the switch. Yealink also specifies a metal chassis with integrated cooling fans for the unit.

For project costing, don’t assume that every part needed around the switch is included in the carton. Fibre links in particular require the correct SFP modules and fibre type for the site design. Copper patch leads, rack power distribution, fibre patching and the connected AV endpoints are also separate project items unless they appear explicitly on your quotation.

If eight network ports cover the complete system with sensible spare capacity, there’s little point filling the rack with a 24-port unit just because the room has twelve chairs. If the design already has 15 or 18 endpoints before future expansion is considered, the RCH240 makes far more sense.

Do I need an RCH240 just because the boardroom has 20 seats?

Not necessarily. The switch is sized from the number of networked AV endpoints and their total PoE requirement, not the chair count. A 20-seat room with a simple device list may need less switching capacity than a 10-seat room with ceiling audio, multiple AVoIP endpoints and room-control hardware.

Can all 24 ports power devices at the same time?

The RCH240 has a 370W total PoE+ budget. Whether all 24 ports can power connected devices simultaneously depends on what each endpoint draws. We calculate the combined wattage from the actual device list and leave sensible headroom rather than assuming 24 ports equals 24 unrestricted PoE loads.

Why would our Dubai AV room need Dante or AES67 support?

Dante and AES67 are used to move digital audio across an IP network. They’re relevant when the room uses compatible network microphones, speakers, DSP equipment or other professional audio endpoints. If your room has no networked audio, that capability may not be the reason to choose the switch.

Does the RCH240 connect directly to our Etisalat or du PABX service?

No. The RCH240 is an Ethernet AV switch, not a SIP gateway or telephone endpoint. Etisalat or du voice connectivity is handled by the PABX, SBC or conferencing equipment elsewhere in the system. The switch can provide network connectivity to supported devices, but it doesn’t register a phone extension itself.
